R.G. Dempster

Robert George Dempster - Singer / Songwriter

Robert Dempster was born in Detroit, MI in 1949AD (NOT B.C.) as the oldest of nine siblings. Early in his life, he realized a passion and, even better, a talent for the arts. As a self-taught artist and designer he sold his first painting at the age of 16, during which time he was a student as CassTechHigh School. He would often spend time outside of school painting buildings and signs.

Dempster began his music career at the age of 17 as the lead vocalist for the rock band The Wha? The band’s success led them to become the opening act for MC5 at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit in 1966. The Wha? Broke up in 1968, but this experience only fueled his passion for singing and songwriting.

In 1971, four years before the actual RenaissanceCenter was built, Robert founded The Renaissance Art Gallery in Greektown. The location, many may recognize today as the popular Greek restaurant, Pegasus.

Dempster moved to Birmingham, MI in 1974 and he began creating signs, logos, brands, ads, and cable TV shows. One example is his iconic logo for WJZZ Jazz Radio, still selling today after 37 years!

In 1975, Robert founded Artwear, a custom design and printing company that conducted local and international business. He sold Artwear in 1984. The very next year, Dempster founded Speedy Tees, a T-Shirt company of which he sold 7 franchises.

In 1991, Robert started a commercial art business called Dempster Designs, a company that he continues to own and operate today. The City of Bloomfield Hills recently gave him the Key to the City for designing, fabricating, and installing the handsome signs at both city limits on Woodward Avenue.

One of the greatest achievements in Robert’s life occurred in 1999, when he married, the harmony to his melody, Caroline Rooney.

Detroit Rocks! was founded by Dempster in 2001. This Detroit promoting T-shirt company was yet another outlet for Robert’s endless stream of creativity. Robert generated all of the designs. Detroit Rocks! encourages the local culture of music, art, and fashion.

Dempster founded Studio D in 2010, an eclectic art, music, and film gallery/venue in Birmingham’s Rail District. Studio D represents the very best of local and national talent. The venue is also host to fund raising galas for various Charity and Non-Profit organizations.

Robert has achieved international success as a musician. His music has reached many audiences, from informal gatherings at Studio D to large scale venues. Twice, he has entertained our troops during Fleet Week in New York City, an opportunity he considers a crowning achievement in his lifetime.

Robert thrives on helping others in need and exudes positivity. He is a current member and the past President of the Bloomfield Hills Optimist Club, he is a member of the Holy Name Church Men’s Bible Study Group and often donates his time and services to many local community organizations. Robert also belongs to the Detroit Sports Broadcaster’s Association and is a current Board Director at Stonycroft Golf Club.

Currently, Robert has been in the recording studio working with 4 time Grammy award winning record producer, Michael Powell, creating the new hit single, "Blue Skies, Yellow Sun". His artwork is on display in the cardiology unit at HenryFordHospital, and some of his music can be downloaded directly from iTunes.

Robert is truly an inspirational spirit who never stops dreaming and planning. He is always heading full speed toward his ambitions with a positive attitude encouraging everyone he meets to “take out your canvas and paint a scene”.
